REFLECTION

We are flesh-and-blood beings. Our lives are comprised of tastes, smells, sounds, touches. What’s left for us when touch becomes a metaphor only? Sometimes it’s tempting to shut ourselves off from memories, now painful. But if we resist that temptation and hold them close, we create a more richly textured life and carry them into our present.

The poet uses the touch of her father’s “rough-textured fingers” to evoke a flood of memories that capture the legacy of her father’s relationship with her. So many mourners regret what has been left unsaid. This poet affirms that touch is enough, that memory is enough, that unspoken words may not matter as much as we think.

If you were powerless to save the apple of your eye, or if you experienced the flurry of medical staff trying to revive a failing heart, you may have some painful images of their ends. Yet our loved ones are so much more than their final moments, and I know that I had to remind myself not to let that last decline eclipse the lifetime of memories that were just as real, precious though ordinary.

What are the sensory moments (a sound, a song, a fragrance, a word) that can bring your loved one into your presence? Is there a quilt, shirt, favorite object, special spot, or treasured pastime once shared that helps you to feel close to them again?
